Scared ShiftlessCan I give it 6 stars？？！ I am lost for words！ This book has everything - paranormal， fantasy， legend， religion， thrills， a little horror， LGBTQ+ and more！！I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who likes reading！！ Hooked doesn’t come close， I do a lot of my reading at night and I had to force myself to put it down or I wouldn’t have had any sleep the last couple of nights at all！ The plot is fantastic and the characters are so realistic， the twists and turns mean you can’t see wh Scared ShiftlessCan I give it 6 stars？？！ I am lost for words！ This book has everything - paranormal， fantasy， legend， religion， thrills， a little horror， LGBTQ+ and more！！I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who likes reading！！ Hooked doesn’t come close， I do a lot of my reading at night and I had to force myself to put it down or I wouldn’t have had any sleep the last couple of nights at all！ The plot is fantastic and the characters are so realistic， the twists and turns mean you can’t see where it is going and what to expect which I love in a book！ I can’t wait to read the next book in the series！Bat Shift CrazyTheo has done it again！！ I waited not so patiently for this second book in the Nyx series and I’m not disappointed in the slightest！ I feel like Nicky is coming into her own now and she is finding out more about herself and her humanity。I love how Theo brings so many concepts and ideas together ans has vampires， werewolves， an elemental， witches and warlocks as well as devout Christians， a Christian sect， LGBT themes and loads more， I really love the undertones and almost hidden messages to always be yourself and love you for being you etc， I feel there are some strong mantras and intimations in among the humour and semi-dark themes。 Next please！No Shift SherlockNooooo！！！Why is it that just when I feel I’m getting into the swing of a really great book， that it finishes on a big， fat， juicy cliffhanger？？！ Well Theo has really done it again with this third in a series book。 Nicky and Devin are out to save the day again， this time with the help of a recovering Malinda， and Hailey who assists from afar。 They are still battling against Mina and the Order of the Morning Dawn and this time the stakes are raised （no pun intended！！） as Mina tries to eradicate witches and vampires for ever with the help of some angels， but all is not as it seems…Now I just need Theo to finish writing book 4 so I can find out what happens to the ……。。 I better not say any more！！Shift for BrainsI absolutely loved this next book in the series， as I expected I would！ I was really eager to read it and was not disappointed。 Zombies are taking over and the only way to save the world is for Alice to unite Nicky and the vampires but can they learn to work together？ Plan seem to be coming together but then they get a nasty surprise and more to contend with whilst trying to save the world from zombie apocalypse！ Nicky has to pull out all the stops and make herself a future target in order to save the day。I can’t wait for the next book！Shift HappensI laughed， I cried， I laughed some more… a lot more！ I absolutely love Nicky and friends， as I do all of Theo’s characters。 What an amazing soul-searching journey Nicky goes through in this last book of the series。 There are some interesting new characters we meet along the way as well as some characters from previous series within the multi-series。 I’m sad that Nicky’s adventures have ended for now but I’m sure she will pop up somewhere again！ I can’t wait for the Vilokan Asylum series with Dr。 Cain， I just know it’s going to be amazing！Shift on a ShingleI was eagerly awaiting this book and I was not disappointed。 I loved the progression of Nicky’s story with all the usual twists， turns and surprises I expect from one of Theo’s books！ I hope we’ll see her again sometime！ 。。。more

catch Alice and stake her， she can eat her heart and hope that would return her shapeshifting abilities back to her。 But maybe that won’t be the solution she hopes for！She could be stuck in a man’s body， a human body， for the rest of her long and elemental life。 Her flatmate Donnie is also a trans woman and was the one who saved her when she first came to town， without even a stitch of clothing。 At the club one night she notices an old vampire talking to one of the drag queens and then luring them out。 Nicky runs out to save them and ends up staking this vampire， who she later finds out if called Wolfgang and is quite an old vampire who was part of the original Order of the Morning Dawn。 This order created nightwalkers and used witches for their own ends， to destroy those they thought of as abominations。 As a water elemental， Nyx was completely genderless and had never known any parents。 She used to live in a lake and came onto land to lure her human prey， by shifting into the figure her victim desired， then dragging their body into the water to eat them！ Now she has been forced to live as a human herself for the last five years， she has come to rethink how she treated humans and isn’t sure she will want to go back to quite the same method of getting food， if she can ever go back to what she was。The storyline brings in aspects of other characters from other of the author’s series and even Nyx is shown in one。 Wolfgang and the Order of the Morning Dawn also pay a key role， as does the hunt for Alice and a large number of younglings， newly made vampires， turning up in the part of Kansas she is in。 What Nicky may have to do， to infiltrate the Order and get a lead on Alice’s location， is far beyond anything she is comfortable with。 She also ends up persuaded to team up with Wolfgang， who has persuaded her that he can locate Alice with his senses and help take her down， allowing her to have Alice’s heart， so long as he can take her body to the Order as part of his deal with them！ Whether Nicky can trust any of the parties she ends up working with， will soon be revealed and I can’t wait to read more of her story。 She is a complex character， who has lived a long life and the addition of a certain cigar smoking sprite later on， is really funny。Book TwoThis book sees Nicky， only going by the name Nyx whilst she is hunting down vampires， in a proper relationship with Devin， who has discovered his warlock powers and helps Nyx to burn out the vampires hearts， before they take the bodies back to the old crematorium， now Nicky’s club and bar。 She gets to headline on her own stage and has a solid following and is now introducing her flatmate and drag queen to also do an act。 On their first night performing together， an old female vampire comes into the club and somehow manages to force Nicky to shapeshift into a bat！ Being forced to drink Alice’s blood by Wolfgang， when the Order of the Morning Dawn captured them and he compelled her。 Alice had the power to shift into a bat， something she had gained when she took Nyx’s ability to shapeshift， along with other abilities she managed to take from those she bit。 The only person Nicky knows that might be able to help her with this strange urge to shift when she is around hungry vampires， is Doctor Cain， at the Vilokan Asylum of the Magically and Mentally Deranged。 She never thought she would ever go back there voluntarily， but he may be the only person able to help her and Devin’s mother， who was drained by a powerful vampire。 Mina， one of the innocent looking old women running the Order， managed to unstake all of the ancient vampires held beneath their church and in lots of other locations。 Releasing all these ancient vampires has left yet another problem to be dealt with。Turning up at the secret voodoo city， hidden under the city of New Orleans， doesn’t allow them immediate entry， until Annabelle verifies their identities and sends her own escort to them。 This is the interesting rainbow snake shapeshifter Pauli， who can teleport them directly into the city。 He is also rather flirty towards Nicky， which gets Devin a bit jealous！ These bat shifting vampires have some sort of plan and what part Nicky and Devin have in it， is about to be revealed。 Nicky suddenly having this unusual ability， is more than a coincidence and must be linked to the attack on Devin’s mother。 Cain takes Nicky back into therapy and she ends up having to share a room with Devin’s mother， which makes for some interesting conversations， as his parents were deeply religious and hated his lifestyle， trying to force him to be like his father， who was high up in the Order。 They saw Nicky as an abomination， and those like her， seeing them as being as bad as vampires and witches， even though the Order actually used both of those for their own gain。 Mina is offering redemption to those who help her and the chance to live a life free from harm。 But how much anyone should really trust her， given her role within the Order and her fanatic beliefs， is suspect。 Cain calls in some extra assistance， but the Order have celestial magic under their belts and that is a hard nut to crack。 Nicky thought she and Devin were the ones hunting down any vampires that came after them， but now it seems the tables have been turned and they are being hunted and Devin’s parents may have some critical information both sides will need to win the battle to come。 Lots more to come for Nicky， Devin， Cain， the voodoo loas and all the other magical beings on their side。 I look forward to more action to come。 Book ThreeNicky is looking to hire some new back-up singers for her club and Devin has arranged for three young women to come in for an audition。 The women are Amelia， Katie and Rose。 Katie is over confident and pushy about her talent， whereas Rose is best at operatic arias which are not quite what Nicky’s club is about， and then the shy and timid looking Amelia。 She listens to each of the girls sing and offers Amelia the chance to open for her that night， as her other main singer Geraldo had to leave suddenly after a death in his family。 Katie seems quite jealous of Amelia， voicing that it should have been her to have the first chance to sing， but Nicky takes on all three and offers them the chance of being regular back-up singers and to open for her and Geraldo at times。 Amelia opens up for Nicky and she asks the other two girls to take in the atmosphere in the club and see her act as well。 Nicky notices her young charge Malinda is hanging around the bar with an unsuitable character and decides to speak to her later。 But the evening doesn’t end smoothly， as one of the girls ends up dead in the car park， with no apparent cause。 It wasn’t a vampire as there are no marks on their body， but her sidekick Felix， from her Neck days， enters the dead body to examine it and declares that the girl’s soul has been taken！What sort of creature or monster could steal someone’s soul， is a new one for Nicky and she asks for help from Dr Cain and others and is lead to the conclusion， especially from one of her dreams， that the Grimoire of the Nazarene is involved and Mina from the Order of the Morning Dawn is desperate to obtain it， so she can call forth angels to kill all of those she and others deem unacceptable！ Her dream of the Nazarene gives her vague clues on how to destroy the Grimoire， to stop the chance of anyone using it， something no one else has ever be able to destroy and which can do great harm if allowed to continue to exist。 She and Devin attempt to seek out the location of the grimoire， thought to have been buried with a body， on his father’s request， but no one knows the name of the deceased or where the body was buried！ Another victim is killed at Nicky’s club and she finds another was killed while she was away， making it personal for Nicky。 She needs to find the person stealing souls and killing people close to her and the club， before this being becomes too strong to take down。 Some exciting new talent for Nicky’s club brings its own danger and somehow this is all linked to the grimoire， the Nazarene， Mina and her group， and all the killings going on， which continue to escalate on both sides of the fight。 Nicky may have both Devin， a warlock， and Malinda， a witch， on her side but may have to make a deal with the devil to save her friends and stop this killer！ Book FourKansas City overrun with zombies， created as a side effect from Nicky destroy the Nazarene’s Grimoire。 Their numbers are too great for Nicky alone to handle and even though her young ward Malinda has managed to create a spell to destroy the younger zombies， it doesn’t stop any who have been around a bit longer， and Devin’s warlock fire would take too long to take down a zombie， leaving it still able to bite someone。 The whole city has been placed in quarantine， with the army fiercely defending any crossing points and not allowing people to pass until completely checked for infection。 Nicky， Malinda and Devi are stuck in her club， a former funeral home， and desperately need to find some help to take out the zombies， before they completely overrun al who remain locked up in the city。 She reaches out to Alice for help to raise an army of vampires to take out the zombies， but they need to work out a method for getting out of the city and then bringing in an army unnoticed by the military。 Not as easy as it sounds。 Malinda contacts her fellow witch Hilary and together the pair work out some potions and spells to help in the battle。 If they can’t stop this zombie apocalypse， then it could be the end of the world as they know it！With Nicky being an Elemental， she at least is safe from the zombies， but Malinda and Devin certainly aren’t。 Once she brings more vampires to the city， she will need to keep both of them close at hand， in case any of the younglings decide to have a snack on her people。 They all need to use their connections to get out of the city initially， with Alice keeping quiet about what her actual plan is for recruiting a large army of vampires to their side， especially with Nyx being known as a deadly vampire killer in her own right。 Mercy is brought into the fold， having her own issues with the vampires in Europe who prefer to stick with the old ways and not adhere to her sire Niccolo the Damned’s final wish， for Mercy to take his place in charge of the whole Vampire Council， leaving her back in the Americas and having to work without using her compulsion。 Something that she grew to hate using more than ever， because of the effect it had on herself。 Mercy uses her seer vampire Sarah to help broadcast a call to arms for vampires far and wide， to come and help in Kansas City， to save human lives or see their ability to feed and prosper dwindle。 They visit Merlin as a boy and his parents and are invited to touch the Tree of Life， giving each some extra powers to discover in their moment of need。Part of the potion Malinda and Hilary must concoct， needs the essence of the Neck， placing someone in danger of being hunted by the Neck they call， until they are either consumed or the Neck become human as Nicky did。 That seems unlikely， as Nicky had a very separate route to her current life and it took her years to accept she could not go back to what she used to be， without eating the very man she has come to love， Devin！ She has had to make a new enemy， whilst hoping to also stop another older foe， Mina and the Order of the Morning Dawn。 Mina has her own plans for stopping the zombie apocalypse and it involve killing vampires as well， since she views them all as abominations。 She always seems to have a plan which is steps ahead of Nicky and co， always managing to trap them into making an attack or approach that will place them in a weaker position and liable to be trapped by Mina’s use of celestial powers。 Nicky has some revelations about her true origins and her parents in one visit with the old version of Merlin and is also given a strange instrument for her upcoming battle。 Not exactly what you might expect！ Another great storyline in this series and building up with problems to come for Nicky from the Neck in the next！ Book FiveNicky is having to figure out what to do to stop the three Neck who look exactly like her boyfriend Devin， from eating him or getting her to return to the water。 When one of the Neck manages to pass on a threat to her when she is having a bath， through the bath water she is in， matters take a turn for the worse。 Her friend Donnie has finally returned to town with her husband Caleb， after they fled during the zombie apocalypse and had been staying in Las Vegas。 They come to watch her performing at her club， which was a former mortuary and given to her by Alice， and return to a casino hotel by the river after the show。 The threats are to those she loves and she races to the hotel and finds them safe， but one of the Neck already working on an elderly lady a few doors down， showing that they could get to anyone she loves or cares about， at any time。 Her sort of daughter Malinda， has gone out for the night and is also possibly in danger， especially when Nicky finds her phone signal places her actually on the river。 So she panics and ruins what could have been the start of a beautiful relationship！One of the Neck turns up at her club with a word of warning and is in fact her sister， Lorelai， not that she even remembers her。 She is on Nicky’s side and doesn’t want to force her back into the water， but tells her that the other two are determined to get her one way or another。 The Neck have grown in numbers up to a thousand and are gathering in the rivers and waterways around the city。 Threats are made and warnings given that if she doesn’t come back to them， then they will escalate their actions and many innocent humans will die。 One such warning is a pile of bones surrounding her motorcycle one day， another is piles of bones all along the riverbank！ She is persuaded to use her druidic violin she was given when she， Devin and Malinda visited the Tree of Life and spoke with Merlin。 All gained an extra ability from the visit and hers is this magical bardic violin that gives visions to her and those around her。 But as usual with something magical， if she doesn’t ask the right question， she won’t get an answer she wants。 She first asks how she can kill the Neck， but the Tree of Life is not concerned with Death and doesn’t help her。 The right question will allow her to see the past and hopefully find the witch who originally cursed them into becoming the Neck， from the water elemental beings she recently found out she actually was。When Lorelai， Devin and Malinda follow her after her latest vision， hoping to all travel to Annwn， Nicky’s original home and where she was known as Amergin， they end up separated。 Amergin and Lorelai cannot exist in the same place they are already， as the wonderful Merlin tells them。 I love how he gives all of his advice in the usual cryptic messages， never directly answering any of Nicky’s questions， but just leading them on a path until they come up with the answers themselves！ A powerful witch was responsible for the first of her kind to be taken from the sacred waters of Annwn。 Lorelai and Amergin were the two she took， as well as the essence of another， for a very specific reason on Earth。 The witch they find out is called Mother Shipton and she has been around for thousands of years and is very powerful and able to trick them easily as well as defeat other magic users and even druids， such as Elijah Wadsworth， the father of Merlin。 They must face the darkness that Mother Shipton brought into their lives and find the light to battle her evil。 More to come as they search for a witch called Nimue， to help Lorelai find her lost love！ Loads of laughs in this one as Nicky and the others have to explain lots of slang to Lorelai， but also lots of death as the Neck try to force Nicky to do as they want and Mother Shipton tries her best to coerce the sisters to act in her own interests yet again。 Guilt for so many deaths， but Nicky can only do what she can and seek out the light and love for Devin and her family。 Book SixThis book sees Nicky （Nyx）， Devin， Lily and Malinda having to face off against over a thousand Neck who have been corrupted by the witch， known as Mother Shipton。 The Neck in the river are now Elemental Vampires and keep trying to come out of the water to feed on humans for their blood。 Luckily they can’t come out during the day， but it means that every night the group have to face off against increasing numbers of Neck， who refused the initial offer of being cleansed in Avalon and returning to their original form as water nymphs。 The only problem is that each one they injure or kill on land， just soaks back into the river and reforms， to come back another night！ Nicky is even worried that she won’t be able to keep on running her club， where she sings each night， as she is otherwise engaged。 She uses her bardic violin to see if she will be granted a vision of what to do。Mother Shipton took her sister Loralei and Nicky wants to save her， but finds out that she will have to get Jakob， the man Loralei loves， out of the stone his essence was locked up in centuries ago。 It is the love Jakob has for Loralei that should allow this to happen。 But first， the group must find Nimue， a fairy who holds the secret to freeing her sister from Mother Shipton。 When one of the Neck comes to her club， she finds that her playing of the bardic violin has， instead of giving her a vision， has affected the Neck and subdued their vampiric desires。 It has left the group able to split， with Nicky able to sing at the club after playing her violin at sunset each evening， whilst the others follow leads to find Nimue。 But they soon find she is closer than first thought， with her essence act 。。。more

“The Legend of Nyx” is a wonderful addiction to the “Gates of Eden”， a fully original verse that loosely borrows Arthurian tropes and transfer them organically into a modern urban fantasy that spans centuries， crossing realms and blurs the boundaries between reality and legend and transforms them into a veritable smørrebrød of action， unexpected twists， wonderful characters and mind-blowing descriptions， garnished with a good dose of magic some sprinkles of mythical lore and some paranormal roma “The Legend of Nyx” is a wonderful addiction to the “Gates of Eden”， a fully original verse that loosely borrows Arthurian tropes and transfer them organically into a modern urban fantasy that spans centuries， crossing realms and blurs the boundaries between reality and legend and transforms them into a veritable smørrebrød of action， unexpected twists， wonderful characters and mind-blowing descriptions， garnished with a good dose of magic some sprinkles of mythical lore and some paranormal romance on the side， and served with very well-crafted， with an accurate world building， interesting characters， captivating writing style and carefully editing。 Monroe’s ‘Gates of Eden’ verse is populated by a vast number of extraordinary characters， which are （unless very subjectively） almost impossible to rank， but even among the best of the best， Nyx is even more remarkable than the rest， is water elemental and human predator， whose MO consist in using its shapeshifting abilities to take on the most alluring form for its intended victims， to attract them and consume them， a consummated killer by nature。 Unfortunately， the last victim stole Nyx shapeshifting powers， letting Nyx trapped into a male body， which is as worse as it gets， because Nyx， regardless of appearances is female at core。 Now Nyx is not only stuck into a human body， but the also the wrong identity， forced to navigate the human world， to interact， even sympathize with her former victims， while dodging all kind of prejudice and discrimination。 Monroe utilizes Nyx story to further delve into the theme， allowing the reader to understand and relate to Nyx’ everyday struggles and approach – always in exquisite， elegant and respectful manner issues of identity， social pressure， religious bigotry， and acceptance。Nyx journey forces her to interact， even sympathize with her former victims， while experiencing and dodging all kind of prejudices and discrimination in the process。 By the end of the tale Nyx has come a long way， fighting not only every kind of supernaturals （vampires， demons， asylum residents and zombies） but also for her own place in society， before finally facing the Neck， who demand her return to her formed water elemental life。 Nicky is a real hero; the kind of hero that does things just because they must be done， and need no other reason， even when she could choice differently。 Hunting evil in in 12-inch pumps is Nicky’s specialty， and when all is set and done， only a question remains: why haven’t this Queen made it yet to Drag Race？ Because seriously that would be E·P·I·C。When it comes to Monroe， learn to expect the unexpected， and then some more。 Even after fifth previous instalments in the series， Monroe will shock you in the very best way。 His ingenuity and the permanent ‘creative fugue’ that seems to permeate every and each one of his characters， and I must add his wonderful and completely disregard of boundaries， is itself legendary。 Even so， Nyx takes the whole the whole verse to a brand-new level， she is the embodiment of queerness， through and through， not a token queer to please the masses， but a fully fleshed character that brings us into a journey to find/regain her true identity while letting us take part in an amazing urban fantasy adventure。 Monroe uses his highly original style to criticize societal norms without ever for a nanosecond forget his very first intention: to entertain the reader to the fullest。 。。。more
